10 Décor Ideas That Look Expensive (and Aren't)

1. Let the lighting do the heavy lifting

Ditch the overhead fluorescents. String lights, paper lanterns, or a couple of well-placed uplights change a room more than any centerpiece. Rentals are cheaper than you'd think.

2. Go green instead of floral

Fresh-cut blooms are gorgeous and expensive. Potted plants, eucalyptus runners, and dried pampas give you the lushness for a fraction of the cost.

3. Drape fabric

Sheer fabric hung from the ceiling or pooled across a table adds instant softness. Buy in bulk from a fabric wholesaler and you'll spend less than a decent bouquet.

4. Build your own backdrop

A balloon arch, a paper flower wall, or a cluster of vintage frames. All Instagram-worthy, none require a professional installer.

5. Candles, everywhere

Tea lights, pillars, tapers — mix the holders and let them cluster. Flameless versions work great where open flame isn't allowed.

6. Borrow and thrift

Vintage furniture, mismatched china, antique frames. Thrift stores and specialty rental companies can outfit an entire tablescape for pennies on the dollar.

7. Project instead of print

A projector throwing a pattern, monogram, or slideshow onto a bare wall replaces expensive signage — and you can change it mid-event.

8. Try restraint

Sometimes one stem in a bud vase, a linen runner, and a handwritten place card is more elegant than a maximalist tablescape. Trust the white space.

9. Make the food part of the design

A well-styled charcuterie board, a tower of macarons, a bowl of glossy stone fruit — food that photographs is décor that feeds people.

10. Reuse the ceremony pieces

That floral arch from the ceremony? It becomes the head-table centerpiece. Zero extra cost, one great photo.

Good design is about knowing where to spend and where to hold back. Pick two or three moments to invest in and let simplicity carry the rest.
